What's new? Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major cause of hepatocellular cancer. The virus also appears to be linked to non‐hepatocellular cancers, though associations remain unclear. In this investigation of a large cohort of Chinese patients, gastric cancer tissues were analyzed for the presence of HBV DNA and hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg). HBV infection was found to be significantly associated with gastric cancer, as well as with cholangiocarcinoma, non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma, pancreatic cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, cervical cancer and brain cancer. The data further suggested that HBV infection was associated with earlier cancer diagnosis and death.
