What's new? Women who undergo treatment for endometrial cancer generally have a favorable prognosis. For some patients, however, improved survival leaves them vulnerable to the development of second primary cancers (SPCs). This study, based on analyses of cancer registry data for patients in Sweden and Germany, provides a comprehensive overview of the risk of specific SPCs in women diagnosed with endometrial cancer. In both patient populations, risk of SPCs of the ovaries or kidneys was elevated. Risk of second ovarian endometrioid carcinoma was especially high, however, potentially complicating outcomes for women who choose ovarian preservation during endometrial cancer surgery.
