Abstract:
What's new? Metabolic syndrome encompasses a variety of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and it has been linked to several cancers. Here, the authors looked for a tie to aggressive prostate cancer by conducting a prospective study of 9,097 men in Iceland. To create a metabolic syndrome “score,” the researchers considered four factors: BMI, blood pressure, triglycerides, and fasting blood glucose. Hypertension and type 2 diabetes were associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, including aggressive disease, while BMI and triglycerides were not associated with risk. Higher metabolic syndrome score was associated with a higher risk of fatal prostate cancer.
