Abstract:
Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma (PT‐RMS) is a rare malignancy affecting children and adolescents. PT‐RMA prognosis is thought to be affected primarily by older age (over 10 years), larger tumor size, and retroperitoneal lymph node (RPLN) involvement. This investigation of PT‐RMS found, however, that none of these factors were linked specifically to overall survival. In addition, analysis of tumor assessment revealed that among older PT‐RMS patients lacking nodal enlargement, more than 51 percent of nodal disease was missed by assessment strategies based on imaging alone. Rather, analyses indicated that surgical sampling of 7‐12 RPLNs is necessary to avoid understaging and, potentially, undertreatment.
