Abstract:
What's new? While 12 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) currently are considered high‐risk for cervical cancer, molecular evidence suggests that HPV types closely related to these high‐risk viruses are also carcinogenic. Here, the authors investigated HPV73, a possibly carcinogenic virus not recognized by most primary HPV screening platforms. HPV73 was detected in 3% of formalin fixed paraffin embedded invasive cervical cancer samples. However, the virus was present in more than 56% of Aptima‐negative cervical cancers and in nearly 30% of Aptima‐negative cases of cytological severe cervical dysplasia. The findings warrant consideration of HPV73 inclusion in primary HPV screening.
