Abstract:
The topic of complementary medicine is relevant in everyday gynecological oncology practice. Patients with breast cancer and gynecological tumors are very interested in complementary therapies and therefore ask their cancer care team for advice. The request can be met with different offers. Oncology physicians can give patients information on the topic, advise and support them when choosing complementary therapies, or treat them with complementary therapies. The international Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) has defined competencies for health professionals in the field of integrative oncology, including specific competencies from the categories of knowledge, skills, and abilities. The results of a study within the Kompetenznetzwerk Komplementärmedizin in der Onkologie (Competence Network for Complementary Medicine in Oncology, KOKON) showed that following a training (KOKON-KTO), physicians can advise patients on complementary therapies in just 20 min during a consultation. In this article, examples of reputable sources of information are provided, the elements of the KOKON-KTO consultation are presented, and opportunities for further training are given.
