Abstract:
Patients with breast hypertrophy present with a wide variety of symptoms and in addition to physical complaints they frequently suffer from psychological complaints. Reduction mammaplasty is still one of the most frequently performed plastic surgery operations on the female breast, but in many cases the costs are not covered by the health insurance. The aim of this monocentric retrospective study was to evaluate the influence of reduction mammaplasty on the complaints of the patients. The evaluation showed a significant postoperative reduction of back pain and 50% of the patients were postoperatively free of symptoms. As a consequence, there was also a significant reduction of headache, neck pain, muscular tension and shoulder pain and there was a significant improvement in postural disorders. Skin alterations and inflammation were significantly reduced in the postoperative setting. The effect of the surgery on the psychological symptoms was assessed as positive, there was a significant improvement in self-confidence, body image and well-being and it also resulted in an improvement in the situation in the professional life. In summary, there was a significant improvement of the physical and psychological complaints.
