Abstract: So far no empirical studies on the negative effects of body-oriented psychotherapy have been carried out. Using the example of concentrative movement therapy (CMT), which is established in inpatient psychotherapy as an adjuvant body-oriented group psychotherapy procedure, it was examined which negative effects are reported for inpatient and day treatment in CMT groups and if they differ from the results of other studies. Various patient and treatment characteristics were taken into account as influencing factors and the relationship to the evaluation of treatment by the patients was examined. Material and methods A total of 251 patients completed the short form of Negative Effects Questionnaire (NEQ), Questionnaire for the Assessment of Side Effects and Negative Experience in Group Therapy und Therapy Evaluation Questionnaire for Concentrative Movement Therapy in Group Therapy Setting (TBF-CMT-G) at the end of the CMT group treatment. Age and gender as well as number of group sessions and type of treatment facility were recorded as covariables. The statistical values of the publications on NEQ and NUGE-24 were used for comparison. Results At least 1 negative effect was reported by 59.4% of the patients. Half of them reported at least two negative effects, mainly related to certain symptoms as a result of the treatment. Negative effects resulting from the group setting were only minor and mainly concerned the experience of being overwhelmed. Few effects could be determined for the covariables. There were several almost exclusively negative significant correlations for the treatment evaluation. Conclusion Negative effects of CMT group therapy in inpatient or day treatment were often reported but this is also true for other therapeutic methods. There is little evidence of a typical risk profile for CMT group therapy or that this form of treatment is particularly stressful compared to other forms of therapy. The results of the study underline the need to provide patients with clear information about the therapeutic procedure and possible negative effects even with a positive course of treatment.
