Abstract: In this study, three technical solutions were compared with regard to their effectiveness in reducing urban flooding in the urban drainage system of a virtual catchment area. A suitable methodology was developed on how such a comparative analysis can be carried out in other catchments as well. In total, three technical solutions were implemented in a modified 1D-2D flood model, and a real heavy storm event was simulated: i) stormwater retention basins; ii) emergency spillways in combination with a retention swale; iii) combination of decentralized nature-based solutions for stormwater management: extensive green roofs, permeable parking areas, infiltration swales, and retention shafts. The effectiveness was quantified and evaluated based on the relative deviation from the reference conditions for a total of four objectives, water level at a hot spot, runoff in the sewage system, combined sewer overflow volume, and flooding areas. It could be shown that the decentralized nature-based solutions as well as the emergency spillways can reduce the water level as well as the flooded areas. For the evaluation of the entire urban drainage system, a combined approach with regard to effectiveness is to be aimed for and analyzed with real catchment areas and real flooding events.
