Abstract:
Vascular injury in the context of trauma is rare. There are only few standardized recommendations for the care of these injuries, so that a large variance can be assumed. The aim of the present survey was to determine the current status of vascular trauma care in Germany as well as the need for and form of appropriate training programs. Material and methods An online survey was conducted via SurveyMonkey® with members of the German Society for Vascular Surgery and Vascular Medicine (DGG). Results A total of 10.6% of the members contacted participated in the survey. Most hospitals treat 5–10 vascular injuries per year, with the highest numbers accumulating in supraregional trauma centers. Vascular trauma care is provided by different departments depending on the anatomic location of the injury. Clinics for vascular surgery are rarely involved in the treatment. Most of the respondents were interested in further training in vascular traumatology techniques. Discussion Clinics for vascular surgery are rarely involved in the care of vascular trauma, according to the available survey results. Possible explanations for this lie in local and infrastructural conditions. Active involvement of physicians trained in vascular surgery in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular trauma is desirable and should be actively offered. Learning the techniques necessary for this can take place, for example, within the framework of practical courses.
