Abstract:
Occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) and parietal lobe epilepsy (PLE) are rare in adulthood. The clinical symptoms can be subjectively perceived, objectively observed or also occur subjectively as well as objectively. The seizure semiology is classified into initial and delayed symptoms depending on whether the symptoms originate in the occipital or parietal lobes or arise by the propagation of the ictal activity in other brain regions. The leading initial symptoms in OLE are visual and oculomotor symptoms and in PLE elementary somatosensory sensations. Although electroencephalography (EEG) is the most important method in the diagnostics of epilepsies, the localization value of scalp EEG in OLE and PLE is limited. The differentiation of the seizure onset zone is mostly based on intracranial EEG recordings and the presence of a structural lesion in imaging. The source localization using magnetoencephalography and high-resolution EEG generally shows a good correlation with seizure onset zone and can be applied in diagnostic of posterior cortex epilepsies.
