Abstract: Model cloud responses to aerosol‐radiation interactions strongly depend on the vertical placement of smoke with respect to the clouds For shallow stratocumulus, aerosol‐induced warming within the clouds reduces cloud amounts by decreasing relative humidity For deeper stratocumulus, increase in stability due to aerosol heating overwhelms cloud burn‐off and delays its transition to cumulus
