Kurzfassung:
Cory Dean of The New York Times received AGU's Walter Sullivan Award for Excellence in Science Journalism for her article, “Army Corps of Engineers Struggles to Alter Mississippi's Fate.” Dean's strong interest in coastal erosion and ecology led her to write the story, which explores the engineering and scientific difficulties associated with trying to control the natural evolution of a river delta. The story reports on the ongoing efforts of the Army Corps of Engineers to keep the Mississippi flowing along its traditional course. The river, however, is inexorably fighting to change its course, as it has many times in the past.
