    Abstract: Sequential images of visible wavelength reflectance from channel 3 (540–560 nm) of the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) have been used for computing advective velocities in the eastern English Channel, using the maximum cross‐correlation technique. The computation method, known as matched filtering, is widely used by meteorologists and has recently been applied by oceanographers to detect sea surface motion from satellite infrared images. Provided accurate coregistration of images is achieved by matching ground control points, significant correlation is obtained when the technique is applied to CZCS data, and coherent velocity distributions are obtained for United Kingdom shelf waters. The residual circulation patterns for the English Channel are found to be consistent with previous studies and recent observations.
