Kurzfassung: In the tape winding/laying process, the quality of on-line consolidated thermoplastic composite parts is highly dependent on processing conditions, such as winding speed, local processing temperature and compaction pressure. Composite rings were manufactured using glass fibre (GF)/polypropylene (PP) tape with hot air as the heating source. Effects of processing conditions on consolidation quality were studied, and the upper bound for good consolidation and the lower bound for overheating were established for winding speed as a function of processing temperature, when the compaction pressure was kept constant. A simple consolidation model, based on heat transfer and intimate contact, was applied to correlate winding speed with processing temperature, and good correlation was obtained with experimental data.
