Abstract: We describe a new ammonoid fauna from the T aurus M ountains of southern T urkey. The C arnian ammonoid fauna from A şağiyaylabel is presented for the first time. Ammonoids were obtained from limestone to marl beds of an approximately 35‐m‐thick section, which presents the rare opportunity to investigate ammonoid faunas across the L ower– U pper C arnian boundary. Intense sampling near the village of A şağiyaylabel led to the recognition of a new L ower C arnian ( J ulian 2) to U pper C arnian ( T uvalian 1) ammonoid fauna from the K asimlar F ormation. The genus K asimlarceltites gen. nov. is reported for the first time from the T aurus M ountains, which represents the main faunal element and occurs as huge mass occurrence ( n  ≫ 1 million). K asimlarceltites krystyni gen. et sp. nov., K lipsteinia disciformis sp. nov. and A nasirenites crassicrenulatus sp. nov. occur within the L ower C arnian Carbonate member (Units A – B ) of the K asimlar F ormation from the T aurus P latform U nits. Ammonoids described from the marls of the T uvalian M arlstone member were deposited during a major, T ethyan‐wide climate crisis – the so‐called C arnian crisis – characterized by a demise of carbonate platforms. Based on the biostratigraphic relevance of certain ammonoid taxa described herein, the age of the analysed parts of the K asimlar F ormation is J ulian 2 to T uvalian 1. The discovery of the new ammonoid assemblages from A şağiyaylabel substantiates the significance of U pper T riassic faunas within the T aurus M ountains and facilitates the correlation with faunal assemblages from other regions in the T ethyan R ealm. The ammonoid fauna and facies indicate a general deepening from open‐platform margins, over deeper shelf settings down to an open marine‐influenced basinal environment. The tentative habitat for K asimlarceltites gen. nov. is a shallow platform environment to upper mid‐ramp.
