Abstract:
Hybrid breeding has been instrumental to increasing maize yield, although the underling molecular mechanisms are still unknown. We show that metabolite levels from seedling roots of hybrids grown under controlled conditions can be used to predict biomass of hybrids in the field. At the core of the predictive mechanism is the metabolic robustness of hybrids – a concept that offers the opportunity to improve current maize breeding programs.
