Abstract:
SURFEIT1 genes encode mitochondrial proteins and their mutation causes partial cytochrome c oxidase deficiency in eukaryotic organisms. We show that Arabidopsis contains two SURFEIT1 ‐like genes, one essential for embryo development and the other required for optimal hypocotyl growth, through changes in the activity of hormonal pathways and the levels of the transcription factor PIF4, thus establishing a link between mitochondria and hormonal growth responses.
