Abstract:
Optical modulators consisting of polymer thin-film waveguides doped with organic nonlinear materials such as 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline and trans-β-carotene were simply and inexpensively constructed. The basic modulation property of these devices was demonstrated experimentally. The measured Kerr constants of these polymer thin films depended on the dopant concentration and had a value on the order of 10 -13 m/V 2 .
