Abstract:
Poly(cyclohexylmethylsilane)(PHMS) aligns perpendicular or parallel to the electric field depending upon the temperature for formation of films by casting on Al interdigital electrodes evaporated on glass substrates. The germ of this temperature dependence has been investigated by thermal analysis and Raman scattering measurements. The temperature of ∼14°C at which PHMS effectively aligns along the electric field is equal to the phase transition temperature of its side chains. The presence of interdigital electrodes induces the temperature-dependent ordering of PHMS even when no electric field is applied. This probably accounts for the direction of the electric field orientation of PHMS.
