Layered perovskite oxides of the system La 1- x Ba 1+ x GaO 4-δ were synthesized and their electrical conduction behavior was studied. The oxides of the composition range 0≤ x ≤0.2 were analyzed as a single orthorhombic phase with a K 2 NiF 4 -type structure. In the presence of water vapor, proton conduction was observed due to the incorporation of water into the oxygen vacancies for these oxides. Below 350°C, La 0.8 Ba 1.2 GaO 3.9 was considered to be a pure proton conductor and the activation energy for proton conduction was measured as 0.77 eV. In a dry atmosphere, it exhibited mixed conduction consisting of oxygen ions and holes at a high oxygen partial pressure, p (O 2 ), and showed only oxygen-ion conduction at an intermediate and low p (O 2 ).
