Abstract:
image SARS‐CoV‐2 infection is milder in children, but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. This study finds increased interactions between immune and epithelial cells in children's noses, priming the epithelium for stronger interferon responses upon infection. The nasal mucosa of children exhibits stronger cytokine‐mediated interactions of immune cells with epithelial cells. In vitro pretreatment of epithelial cells with cytokines increases virus sensor expression, enhancing SARS‐CoV‐2 recognition. Decreasing epithelial expression of virus sensors with age associates with increasing risk of severe disease.
