Abstract:
Starting from current scenes of questionable communication, the article leads from the first evidence of a sensitisation for the topic »tact« in the Enlightenment to a pre-scientific justification of tactful interaction at the end of the 18th century by Adolph Freiherr von Knigge. It further traces the »incorporation« of the term in the pedagogical theory of Johann Friedrich Herbart and explores the function of »tact« as a »feeling for the right moment« in psychoanalysis. In the end, based on reflections on the discourse of strangeness, a functional definition of »tact« emerges with the possibility of moderating interpersonal boundaries as boundaries between strangers.
