Abstract:
Introduction : Early neurological disorders of the full-term newborn are poorly documented in Côte-d’Ivoire, apart from perinatal asphyxia. Our study aimed to determine their prevalence and to analyze their epidemiological and clinical profiles as well as their management in the university hospital of Yopougon in Abidjan. Patients and method : This cross-sectional and descriptive study involved 406 full-term newborns, 72 hours old or less, hospitalized in the neonatology unit with neurological disorders at admission. Findings : The prevalence was 53.1%. The epidemiological profile showed a full-term male newborn (sex-ratio of 1.75), referred from a peripheral childbirth delivery room (77.8%), with a delay of more than 24 hours (40.8%). Clinically, there was an anoxic risk in 89.8% of cases and an infectious risk in 32.4% of cases. The Apgar score was below 7 at the 5th minute of life in 62.8% of newborns. Neurological disorders were dominated by abnormalities of primitive reflexes (91.9%) and abnormalities of cry (84.9%). Management was characterized by late admission in outborn newborns and inadequate assessment and treatment. Conclusion : Actions are to be taken at the peripheral level to reduce the delay of transfer to the reference center and at the central level to improve diagnostic and therapeutic means.
