Abstract:
Introducción. La enfermedad de Chagas es una de las principales parasitosis a nivel mundial, aunque se distribuye principalmente en zonas pobres de América Latina. Ante la falta de una vacuna efectiva o profilaxis, la búsqueda activa de personas infectadas y la prevención de la enfermedad son las mejores estrategias para combatirla. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar la prevalencia de la infección por Trypanosoma cruzi y el conocimiento sobre la enfermedad de Chagas en comunidades del estado de Chiapas, México. Material y Métodos. Se realizó la prueba de ELISA a habitantes de dos comunidades que tenían reportes de la presencia de triatominos. A través de encuestas semiestructuradas se determinó el conocimiento sobre la enfermedad y datos de factores de riesgo. Resultados. Se analizaron 317 muestras, de las cuales seis resultaron reactivas a la infección por T. cruzi (1,89 %). Menos de la mitad (39) de los encuestados mencionaron conocer al insecto triatomino, pero de ellos la gran mayoría sabe que puede transmitir una enfermedad potencialmente mortal. Comúnmente conocen a los triatominos como chinches o talaje. Conclusiones. La enfermedad de Chagas sigue activa en zonas endémicas del estado de Chiapas. El desconocimiento sobre los componentes de la enfermedad es evidente y se hace necesario realizar campañas de concientización para atender este problema
