Abstract:
An overview is presented of the population characteristics and the socio-economic features of Brussels-Capital Region. The recent evolution and spatial inequalities of these features are analysed. Due to the processes of suburbanisation and deindustrialisation the contrasts between the poor neighbourhoods in the central area and the rich neighbourhoods in the urban fringe have increased. Brussels-Capital Region is one of the richest regions within Europe, with an unacceptable degree of social and spatial segregation that is not sufficiently countered by the prevailing urban policy.
