Abstract:
Prayers, rituals, practices in the Ashkenazic society: : the tradition of Yiddish books of customs (XVI Century) The purpose of the books of customs ("sifrei minhagim") is to teach to simple Jews how to behave during the feasts and the domestic ceremonies. These books were first printed in Hebrew and then adapted into Yiddish for the less educated in order to facilitate the knowledge of the main practices. In this article, we study two representative exemples : An Italian manuscript (1557) and the first printed edition (Venice, 1589). Based on the passages related to the feast of Purim, this study shows patterns of writing, recurrent themes and the same intention to present, customs in a clear and concise style, in order to favour memorisation. This type of texts brings precious informations about religious life, the patterns of conduct and the transmission of the tradition in the Jewish society.
