Abstract:
The Wandsbecker Bothe, or « Wandsbeck Messenger », named after the small city in the territory of the free town of Hamburg, where it established itself in the 1700's, is edited by the poet Mathias Claudius ; but our concern here is not what makes this periodical worthy for literary history. It served efficiently the economical interests of the region by reflecting day after day, thanks to a remarkable network of correspondents, the evolution of the international political situation. We chose to scrutinize one specific year's collection, that of 1772, which was marked all at once by a palace revolution in Denmark, a manifestation of absolutism... or enlightened liberalism in Sweden and the first partition of Poland.
