Kurzfassung: The objective of this article is to examine the effectiveness of the Korean screen quota system on the box office performance of domestic films. We undertook an empirical analysis and found that the effectively enforced Korean screen quota system did not help to contribute to the box office performance of domestic films. Instead, the results indicate that production budget, critical reviews, and the number of screens contribute significantly to the recent success of Korean movies. Recently, there has been a steep rise in both the production budget of films and the number of multiplex theatres. The nature of game among domestic movie producers has changed to one focused on quality competition (high production and marketing costs). In this article, we found that protection such as the Korean screen quota system does not play any significant role in affecting the box office performance of domestic films.
