For the past 25 years, this journal (Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies = BIES) has played an unusual role. It may well be one of the few academic journals that is entirely devoted to empirical research about a major developing country. After an introductory article on BIES by W. Nitisastro, H. W. Arndt discusses research on the Indonesian economy in Australia, how BIES was founded in 1965, difficulties in getting statistical data on the Indonesian economy, the Work of Indonesia Project of the Australian National University at Canberra, transformation of the Indonesian economy etc. (DÜI-Sen)
