Este artigo explora a recepção interpretativa da história de José (Gênesis 37-50), coletando as posições diferentes em torno da leitura do personagem principal e discurso central desta tradição, a qual tem sido entendida por uma linha de crítica bíblica como argumento legitimador de um poder monárquico. A partir desta revisita se destaca o vazio em torno da análise de Gênesis 47, 13-26, para propor que o resgate dessa história perigosa permite não só uma leitura mais complexa e ideologicamente conflitiva de José e sua história, mas também uma crítica dos sistemas teológicos e econômicos que promovem a escravidão e a opressão do povo.
