Eine Fallstudie zur fortschreitenden Melancholie Celans im schizoiden Formenkreis. Der Autor untersucht die Phasen der Erkrankung und entwickelt daraus eine Biographie Celans mit vielen Einzelheiten. Das Schicksal des Dichters beleuchtet er von zwei Seiten her: aus der systemischen Theorie der Psychotherapie heraus, und aus der Perspektive der Psychoanalyse, im Sinne von Freuds Untersuchungen zur Melancholie. In das Buch sind die neuen Forschungen eingegangen, die Firges seit 1998 über Celans Paranoia betrieb (sein Buch bei Stauffenburg). Dieses neue Buch versucht eine Synthese von Literaturwissenschaft und Psychologie. Erst aus dieser Verbindung heraus lassen sich etliche von Celans literarischen Verschlüsselungen erhellen. In einer feinfühligen Exegese arbeitet Firges die Erkrankung Celans als einen Antrieb seiner poetischen Kraft heraus.
