Der Holzschnitt als eines der ältesten Druckverfahren der Menschheit erlebte mit Albrecht Dürer im Mittelalter seinen Höhepunkt, rückte als künstlerische Technik über die Jahrhunderte mehr und mehr in den Hintergrund und erfuhr plötzlich in ganz Europa zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts eine bahnbrechende Wiederentdeckung. So auch in Wien, wo zahlreiche Künstler und auffallend viele Künstlerinnen den Farbholzschnitt neu belebten. Die Publikation widmet diesem bislang kaum beachteten Phänomen: Rund 240 Werke – auch aus verwandten Techniken wie Linolschnitt oder Schablonendruck – von über 40 Künstlerinnen und Künstlern geben einen beeindruckenden Überblick und lassen die ästhetischen und gesellschaftlichen Errungenschaften des Farbholschnitts im Wien der Jahrhundertwende erstmals umfassend sichtbar werden.
