Die Bündische Jugend der Weimarer Republik ist als Anlaufpunkt für jene, die zu politischen Extremen links wie rechts neigen, gut erforscht. Den Bünden selbst wird dabei aber wenig Aufmerksamkeit zuteil. Auf Grundlage bisher nicht erschlossener Quellen bietet das vorliegende Buch am Beispiel der Biografie von Werner Laß (1902-1999) erstmals in der Forschung einen Einblick in das Innenleben der bündischen Strukturen der Zeit. Laß war Gründer der Freischar Schill und deren Älterenorganisation, den Eidgenossen. Mitglieder waren etwa Rudolf Höß, späterer Kommandant von Auschwitz, und Karl Eduard von Schnitzler, Chefkommentator des DDRFernsehens. Laß hatte gute Kontakte zum Kapp-Putschisten Hermann Erhardt und wurde zwischenzeitlich sogar als Kandidat für die Führung der Hitlerjugend gehandelt. Ab 1931 näherte er sich dann der KPD an, konnte aber wegen seiner Verbindungen u.a. zu Baldur von Schirach nach der Machtergreifung dennoch Karriere bis in die Reichspressestelle machen, während andere Eidgenossen ab 1933 in den Widerstand gingen. Es wird deutlich, warum Laß und seine Weggefährten auch als Mitglieder einer "Generation des Unbedingten" (Michael Wildt) bezeichnet werden.
