Kindermann erzählt für ältere Kinder pointiert und komprimiert die zentralen Inhalte von Shakespeares Komödie "Der Kaufmann von Venedig" : Bassanio, ein armer Edelmann, bittet seinen Freund Antonio um 3.000 Dukaten, die er benötigt, damit er um die Hand der reichen Porzia anhalten kann. Weil sich dessen Reichtum auf seinen Schiffen befindet, leiht dieser sich das Geld bei seinem Erzfeind, dem Juden Shylock, der für den Schuldschein ein halbes Pfund Fleisch Antonios verlangt, sollte er das Geld nicht rechtzeitig zurückzahlen. Während Porzias Hand nur derjenige erhalten soll, der zuvor ein vom Vater ausgegebenes Rätsel löst, wird es für Antonio, dessen Schiffe allesamt verunglücken, zunehmend ernst. Shakespeares zentrale Motive - Rache bzw. starres Beharren auf dem Recht anstelle des Gewährens von Gnade als Folge selbst erlittener Demütigung sowie die Frage, wer der wahrhaft würdige Bräutigam ist - werden zudem auch in Auszügen aus dem Originaltext deutlich gemacht. Zur hilfreichen Vermittlung der Komödie tragen J. Greis als Erzähler und als Bassiano sowie R. Strecker als Shylock bei
