Die Initiative ist der auslösende Impuls für ein Innovationsvorhaben. Die individuelle Entscheidung zum Ergreifen der Initiative ist jedoch nicht beobachtbar und daher schwer steuerbar. Trotz der hohen Bedeutung dieser frühen Phase des Innovationsprozesses fand sie bisher relativ wenig Beachtung. Dietfried Globocnik untersucht unterschiedliche theoretische Bezugspunkte auf deren Erklärungsbeiträge zum Entstehen von Initiativen, leitet Grundbedingungen ab und entwickelt ein Modell, wie die Entscheidung zur Initiative zustande kommt. Unterstützt durch eine innovative empirische Untersuchung legt er dar, welche Personenmerkmale einen „Initiator“ ausmachen und welches Arbeitsumfeld das proaktive Ergreifen der Initiative fördert.
