The play begins in the courtyard of the Headman of a district, with villagers forming the Chorus, some of whom do not speak, but rather bring out the essence of the moment through choreography. The villagers report that the "partisans" of "Bangladesh" are coming from the East, and the village women and children present here are seeking the protection of the Headman."--
