La Deffence, et illustration de la langue françoyse constitue un seuil de l'histoire littéraire. Tout en replaçant l'ouvrage dans les débats poétiques et linguistiques de son temps, le présent travail en souligne la singularité irréductible. Il n'est dès lors pas étonnant que Jean-Charles Monferran ait conservé l'orthographe, mais surtout la ponctuation originales. Cette fidélité permet ainsi de retrouver le rythme que Joachim Du Bellay a voulu insuffler à cette prose pionnière. On le sait, en 1549, L'Olive, premier canzoniere français composé de sonnets, se présentait comme la mise à l'épreuve du manifeste théorique contemporain. On a toutefois préféré donner ici la seconde édition de 1550, forte de ses cent quinze sonnets édités par Ernesta Caldarini qui offre les variantes des cinquante sonnets initiaux. On trouvera encore un glossaire des deux textes de Joachim Du Bellay et un index nominum de La Deffence.

La Deffence, et illustration de la langue françoyse was a watershed in the poetic and linguistic debates of the mid-sixteenth century. As such, the punctuation, as well as the spelling, of the original have been preserved, in order to convey the rhythm that Joachim Du Bellay intended for his groundbreaking prose. He put his theoretical manifesto into practice with a collection of sonnets, Olive. The second edition contained 115 sonnets, given here, together with the variants to the fifty sonnets included in the first edition. An index of names in the Deffence, as well as a glossary for both texts, are also provided.
