Das Buch behandelt Alkaios Frg. 140 V. (marmairei de megas domos .). Die sprachliche, stilistische, geschichtliche und literarische Analyse ist ausführlich und durch die gesamte griechische Literatur weiterverfolgt. Die Abhandlung versucht die bisher oft widersprüchlich vorgeschlagenenen Interpretationen dieses Textes zu übertreffen: sie werden als eine hartnäckige "Luftspiegelung" (in der Bedeutung des ital. "miraggio" im Titel) betrachtet. Die vorgeschlagene Deutung fasst den Text als eine "revolutionäre" Ode auf, mit der sich der verbannte Dichter an die in seiner Heimat gebliebenen Freunde und Verschwörer wendet. Um den Tyrannen zu stürzen, sollen sie zu den Waffen greifen, die den Feinden weggenommen und im großen Tempel geweiht wurden. Die sollten nicht nur vorangegangene Heldentaten beweisen, sondern auch in dem bevorstehenden angekündigten Sturm gegen den Tyrannen tatsächlich benutzt werden. Eine "Brief-Ode", die als solche nicht überraschen soll, da Alkaios eine weitere Nachricht an die Freunde im Frg. 400 V. schickt. Das Beispiel des Alkaios setzt sich in der gesamten klassischen Kultur durch, spiegelt Sinn und Bedeutung nicht nur des Alkaios selbst wider, sondern jeder weiteren Komposition, die zu dieser Gattung gehört und im Buch aufgezeigt und erforscht wird.

This book considers one of the most important fragments of early Greek lyric (Alkaios frag. 140 V.) as a means of communication, a revolutionary ode in which the exiled poet addresses the conspirators who have remained behind in their native city. They should take up the arms which were taken from their enemies and dedicated in the temple, and overthrow the tyrant. It is a letter in ode form that serves as a pattern throughout classical culture, and reflects the purpose and meaning not only of Alkaios, but of all other compositions of this category. Alkaios' text is analysed with regard to its later varied use in all of Graeco-Roman culture.
