Florian Schönfuß nimmt auf der Grundlage bisher unzugänglichen Quellenmaterials aus den Privatarchiven des rheinischen Adels eine regionale Adelsgesellschaft in den Blick, die aufgrund der langen französischen Herrschaft am Rhein von den tiefgreifenden Umbrüchen im Kielwasser der Französischen Revolution in besonderer Weise tangiert war. Mithilfe eines generationenübergreifenden Ansatzes erläutert die steigende Bedeutung von Offizierslaufbahnen bei der Akquise von klientelaren Bindungen, Einkünften, sozialem Prestige und politischem Einfluss. Erstmals wird die adlige Militärlaufbahn aus der mikrogeschichtlich-innerfamiliären Perspektive heraus als wichtiges Instrument einer patriarchalisch verfassten Familienpolitik greifbar, das der rheinische Adel auf virtuose Weise nutzte, um auf grundlegend veränderte gesellschaftlich-politische Rahmenbedingungen zu reagieren.
