Schon aus dem 17. Jahrhundert gibt es mehrere zusammenfassende Bücher über Tromben, welche von der Beschreibung eines Einzelfalles ausgehen, nämlich die 1689 zu Paris erschienenen „Conjectures phys. sur les colonnes de nue“ des übrigens im Buchtitel nicht genannten Pere Francois Lamy, und die 1694 zu Parma erschienene „Opera postuma del Sig. Dottore Geminiano Montanari“, betitelt: „Le forze d Eolo, Dialogo fisicomatematico sopra gli effetti del Vortice, o sia Turbine ... che il giorno 29 Luglio 1686 ha scorso e flagellato molte ville, e luoghi de territorij di Mantova, Padova, Verona etc.“ Diese Bücher enthalten auch bereits Abbildungen von Tromben. Von größerer Bedeutung für die kontinuierliche Entwickelung der Trombenforschung ist aber erst das 1749 in Rom erschienene, 224 Seiten starke Buch von Boscovichi) „Sopra il Turbine che la notte tra gli XI, e XII Giugno de MDCCXLIX danneggio una gran parte di Roma Dissertazione“, welches gleichfalls von einem Einzelfall, nämlich der im Titel genannten Trombe ausgehend, in seinem 2. Teil eine Reihe anderer Beobachtungen heranzieht und im 3. Teil die Entstehung untersucht. Eine erheblich größere Sammlung von Beschreibungen — wenn man von der Tornadoliteratur absieht, bisher die größte überhaupt , und zwar teilweise in wörtlicher Wiedergabe oder Übersetzung, gab im Jahre 1840 der bekannte französische Physiker Peltier in seinem 444 Seiten starken Buche „Meteorologie.
