Thomas Mann behandelt eine für die Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts verhängnisvolle Problematik und zugleich ein zeitloses Thema: Die Verführbarkeit des Einzelnen und der Masse. Achtzig Jahre nach der Erstveröffentlichung des Textes nimmt dieser Band die viel diskutierte politische Botschaft in den Blick. Die Aufsätze zeigen aber nicht nur eine, sondern viele Lesarten dieses zentralen Textes: Philosophie und Psychologie, Ethik und Politik spielen ebenso eine Rolle wie das Italienbild Thomas Manns und die Problematik des Künstlers, die den ?Zauberer?
