Dass die Emotionen des Lesers sein Textverständnis beeinflussen, ist nicht erst mit den Ergebnissen der PISA-Studie ein Credo der Literaturdidaktik geworden. Mit dem involvierten Lesen wird dabei besonders im Kontext literarischer Texte ein Rezeptionsmodus gefordert, der bislang weder begrifflich präzisiert noch empirisch in seiner Wirksamkeit bestätigt wurde. Beides vermag die Studie zu leisten: In einer interdisziplinären Suchbewegung zwischen Deutschdidaktik, Literaturwissenschaft und Psychologie wird zunächst eine Definition des Begriffs formuliert und sodann mit den Methoden der empirischen Bildungsforschung überprüft, wodurch sich die Bedeutung des involvierten Lesens für literarästhetische Urteilskompetenz nun auch empirisch untermauern lässt.
