"Deze studie omvat een brede analyse van de complexe veranderingen in de rurale bewoning binnen de noordelijke provincies van het Romeinse rijk. Vanuit deze benadering, die de blik van traditionele villastudies overstijgt, worden ontwikkelingen in zowel de nederzettingsruimte als de huizenbouw op gestructureerde wijze in beeld gebracht en geanalyseerd. Om die ontwikkelingen goed te kunnen reconstrueren zijn data uit vier landen, Nederland, België, Duitsland en Frankrijk, bijeen gebracht.In een eerste deel is een veelheid aan ontwikkelingstrajecten in de organisatie van de nederzettingsruimte en de huizenbouw beschreven en gevisualiseerd. Als gevolg van de brede geografische en chronologische kaders komen lokale en regionale variatie en patronen goed in beeld. De bekende stenen villa is hierbij niet zozeer het uitgangspunt van de studie, maar vormt een specifiek onderdeel binnen de bredere en meer complexe ontwikkelingen."
