Jean Pauls Beziehung zur Welt der Bilder – äußerer wie innerer – ist vielschichtig und hat sein Schreiben stark geprägt. Während sich ein Interesse an konkreten Werken der bildenden Kunst auffällig in Grenzen hielt, erzählt er doch mehrfach Geschichten über Maler und Verfahren der Bildgenese. Eng damit verbunden ist die Thematisierung und Semantisierung von Sehprozessen und visionären Erfahrungen, von bestimmten Bildtypen und ihren Wirkungen. – Was gewinnen bildende Künstler dem Werk eines Autors ab, bei dem Sehen und Bilder eine solche Rolle spielen? Die Rezeption Jean Pauls durch bildende Künstler hat zu einem breiten Spektrum an bildkünstlerischen Auseinandersetzungen mit seinen Werken geführt. In Einzelbeiträgen vorgestellt werden verschiedene Künstler, die mit ihren Arbeiten die Herausforderung der Jean Paulschen Texte angenommen haben. Zu ihnen gehören Daniel Chodowiecki, Alfred Kubin, Emil Preetorius, Caspar Walter Rauh, Stephan Klenner-Otto, Paul Mersmann und Rolf Münzner.
