Content: A fictional drama based on real events. In 1914, the Japanese military attacks Qingdao, then under German control, and captures approx. 5,000 German prisoners of war. The POWs are imprisoned in different camps in Japan. Matsue Toyohisa, the commander of the camp in Tokushima, treats the POWs in his charge with respect and friendship--against the wishes of the Japanese Army. Matsue wins the trust of the German POWs and develops friendships between the POWs and the local Japanese residents. Even Major Kurt Heinrich, the former governor of Qingdao, is won over by Matsue. When the First World War ends, the now liberated former POWs show their appreciation of Matsue and the local residents by performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony--its first ever performance in Japan
