Das Tafelbild prägt bis heute unser Verständnis von Malerei, wobei die Darstellung des Menschen zu ihren wichtigsten Aufgaben gehört. Die technischen Voraussetzungen, Bedingungen und Parameter der Entstehung des Tafelbildes und seiner weiteren Entwicklung waren Gegenstand eines Disziplinen wie Epochen übergreifenden dreijährigen Forschungsvorhabens, das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung gefördert wurde. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchungen repräsentativer Beispiele aus Antike, Früh- und Hochmittelalter unter dem Aspekt der jeweiligen Darstellung des Inkarnates werden im vorliegenden Band erstmalig vorgestellt. Dabei stehen folgende Fragen im Mittelpunkt: Welche Technik wählte man wann, um welche Wirkung zu erzielen? Wie wurde dabei das aus der Antike tradierte Wissen verarbeitet? Gibt es eine Kohärenz zwischen Technik und Funktion oder Bestimmungsort des Bildes? Wie spiegeln sich gesellschaftlicher Wandel und ideologische Neuorientierung darin? Die für die Tafelmalerei gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden erweitert durch die Beiträge der im Rahmen des Projektes veranstalteten internationalen Tagung, die sich diesen Fragen auch auf den Gebieten der Wand- und Buchmalerei widmen.
