Seit den 1990er-Jahren bereist Thomas Neumann die Länder der ehemaligen Sowjetunion und fotografiert dort. Die seither entstandenen künstlerischen Arbeiten und Reisefotos sind in den Band Exakte Vertrauensgrenzen eingeflossen. Der Fotograf folgt darin den Spuren einer Bild- und Sinnwelten des sowjetischen Sozialismus vor Ort, nachdem sich dessen Versprechen von Fortschritt und einer strahlenden Zukunft erledigt hatten. Seine eigene Herkunft lässt ihn mit einem bestimmten Wissens- und Erfahrungsschatz, aber auch mit einer skeptischen Neugier reisen. Fragen kommen auf nach dem Selbst und seiner Eingebundenheit in die kollektive Erfahrung eines abrupt beendeten ideologischen Systems, das eigentlich auf die Ewigkeit ausgelegt war. Neumanns Archiv bietet kein zusammenhängendes Narrativ. Seine zurückhaltenden bildlichen Beobachtungen laden ein, sich mit ihm auf eine Reise zu begeben, bei der die Deutungshorizonte offen bleiben
