Dans un passage célèbre de La Science, profession et vocation, Max Weber a déclaré à propos de l'époque moderne : 〉 Les penseurs et les écrivains francais du XVIIe siècle tels que René Descartes, Pierre Gassendi et Pierre Bayle ont joué un rôle non négligeable dans l'élaboration et l'accélération de ce processus culturel, fournissant dans bien des cas les calculs et les explications qui ont progressivement banni le mystère et le surnaturel en faveur de l'illumination rationnelle.
