Die wissenschaftlichen Forschungsexpeditionen des 19. und beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts sind unauflöslich mit der Geschichte der maritimen Seefahrt verbunden: Nur das Schiff ermöglichte die Überwindung der Ozeane. Die Kamera als visueller Ausdruck der westlichen Selbstermächtigung war hierbei stetige Begleiterin. Die Eroberung der Welt durch die Fotografie wählte die Form einer wissenschaftlichen Vermessung und führte als Schnittstelle so unterschiedliche akademische Disziplinen wie Geographie, Glaziologie, Ozeanographie, Altertumskunde, Orientwissenschaften, Ethnologie, Anthropologie, Zoologie und Kolonialwissenschaften zusammen. Der Band erörtert anhand von neun Fallbeispielen die fotografische Vermessung der Welt um 1900.
